HSE Graduate School of Business Hosts Final Round of CIMA Emerging Leaders Competition 2021
On May 12, the HSE Graduate School of Business hosted the CIMA Emerging Leaders Competition, an international case championship. The competition is aimed at helping students advance their skills in business process modelling and business forecasting. A team from Southern Federal University (SFU) took first place, and teams from HSE University came in second and third.
The case championship was organized by HSE University in partnership with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, CIMA, and with the participation of Unilever. On behalf of HSE University, the general partners of the case championship were the Graduate School of Business and the Faculty of Economic Sciences School of Finance. Organizational support was provided by Higher Case Community, a student project group.
The winners of the case championship finals were:
1st place

‘We are unbelievably happy we won, since taking second place among such strong teams from all over Russia is an honour for us. We are grateful to HSE University and CIMA for the opportunity to reinforce our skills in financial analysis and risk management,’ said Zafarzhon Maskhudaliev, captain of the MiM Team.
The championship was held in three stages, which included a selection round, a quiz round, and the final round. 38 teams from seven partner universities competed in the local selection stages. Following the quiz round, six teams from four Russian universities advanced to the finals: HSE University, Novosibirsk State Technical University, Southern Federal University, and Novosibirsk State University of Economics and Management.
The finals took place via video conference and brought together cities from all over the world: London, Manchester, Kuala Lumpur, Moscow, Rostov-on-Don and Novosibirsk.
The teams had to demonstrate a high level of knowledge of financial analysis and strategic planning for an expert jury, which included: Vadim Bozhenik, head of CIMA Eurasia; Svetlana Zasukhina, CGMA, MBA, CIA, and senior manager at PwC Academy; Anna Govard, CPA, CMA, and senior manager at AICPA; Trevor Williamson, expert and tutor at The Case Centre; Anastasia Sandomirova, business partner at Unilever; and Yulia Rodicheva, financial manager of the Unilever sales department.
The organizers and partners of the case championship prepared unique prizes for the champions and winners. These include the opportunity of free tuition and exams in the CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting programme, which offers a first-level international certificate in finance; a fast track to a three-month internship at Unilever; and discounts and a full portfolio grade in the admissions process to the Master’s programmes in Corporate Finance and Investment Project Management.

The case championship organized by HSE University and CIMA, the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, is one more step towards a long-term partnership in joint certified Master’s programmes. All tasks align as closely as possible with the requirements expected by CIMA when it certifies its experts.
